The Sin of Hezekiah

Nov 11, 14 The Sin of Hezekiah

Posted by in Culture, Feature, Opinion

by Shawn Meyer With a few exceptions, the record of the kings of Israel and Judah is a biblical Who’s Who of powerful evil. One of those refreshing exceptions is King Hezekiah. He knew his place, obeyed God, and showed humility before Him. Unlike the kings who preceded him, he displayed a passionate hatred of idolatry. 2 Kings 18:5-6 eulogizes, “Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him. He held fast to the LORD and did not cease to follow him.” (NIV). Despite all that counts in his favor, there are at least two blemishes on Hezekiah’s legacy. One was a profoundly foolish decision; the other was an appallingly sinful attitude. Both are recorded in 2 Kings, chapter 20. All eyes were on Assyria. Judah’s brothers to the north had recently fallen to King Shalmaneser. Though God had just delivered Judah from the Assyrians, their brutal campaigns and continued world dominance offered cover for a quietly rising power in the east. Word had reached Babylon that King Hezekiah had fallen ill. In an apparent goodwill gesture, the king of Babylon sent emissaries with gifts. By the time they arrived, God had healed Hezekiah, who was feeling well enough to give them the grand tour, foolishly showing off all the treasures of the palace. Unbeknownst to Hezekiah, they took mental inventory before returning to Babylon. Enter Isaiah the prophet. He rebuked Hezekiah’s indiscretion, saying, “Hear the word of the LORD: The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. . . And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood, that will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” Instead of the desperate weeping and calling out to God for which Hezekiah was...

ILLINOIS’ VICHY REPUBLICANS: TEA-PARTY SELL-OUT AND PRO-LIFE SURRENDER

by John J Kirkwood The dirty little secret about the Republican candidate for Governor in Illinois is that he’s already governing like an Illinois Democrat. Bruce Rauner, like the prettiest girl in the school, usually gets whatever he wants. What makes him so effective? Republicans are desperate, Bruce is a billionaire, and nothing is as persuasive to a desperate loser as cold hard cash. How does a pro-abortion, pro-homosexual rights candidate, who is cool with amnesty, raising the minimum wage, and “common sense” gun control, get the Republican nomination in Illinois? The Chicago way – he buys it. But what about the tea-party and the values voters? Surely their principle rises above the level of bribery? “Two years ago, Rauner also began making large cash payments to Republican, tea party, and other right-wing groups,” writes William Kelly for ChicagoNow. “In 2008, the same groups stood on hilltops and angrily railed, fists pumping in the air, against “pay to play” politics, Illinois corruption, and anyone connected with the name, ‘Rod Blagojevich.’ However, as soon Bruce Rauner showed up with his checkbook, these groups fell quickly in line. Freedomworks’ Matt Kibbe was among the first to sign-on to Team Rauner. Rauner paid other 501(c)3 groups like the Illinois Policy Institute and Jack Roeser’s Family Taxpayers Foundation more than a half million each and, in return, these groups helped organize his political ground game during the GOP primary.” There are some in the tea-party that just took a check – hundreds of thousands of dollars were paid to certain groups while others were conned into a phony “term-limits” fiasco. I guess John McCain will have to revise his slam against the tea-party, In Illinois we don’t have Hobbits – we have the Scottish Lords that betrayed William Wallace. But the Pro-Life groups will remain steadfast, surely they won’t waiver? I wish it were so. “Bruce has been one of the largest supporters of the ACLU Reproductive Rights Project [abortion] for over 20 years,” writes Diana Rauner in...

2016: Shaping Up To Be Another Progressive Yawnfest

Jul 26, 13 2016: Shaping Up To Be Another Progressive Yawnfest

By LUKE HAMILTON The next Presidential election is two and a half years away and I’m already over it. Jeb Bush? Really? Chris Christie, youhavetobekiddingme. Marco Rubio, greeaaaaaat. Ted Cruz? Now we’re talking! But if Ted keeps up his assault for liberty, he’ll be lucky if Soros’s Communist Death Squads don’t get to him first. My thumb is already itching to change the channel from the primary debates to Magnum P.I. reruns. It’s looking like I’ll need my industrial-strength clothes pin to put on my nose in the voting booth again. Are Reince Priebus and the rest of the RNC that out of touch? When, if ever, will they get serious about cultivating real conservatives for our races? Why not toss Boehner and Paul Ryan into the Presidential mixer while you’re at it? I understand that it’s a long road and there are plenty of RINOs left to trot out for our consideration, but I’m already getting depressed thinking about Jeb and Christie, hissy-fitting each other while Paul Ryan smirks and strokes his adams apple. Since I know that this column makes its way into the highest echelons of GOP leadership, here are a few suggestions from the worker bees. Here’s what we want in a candidate: Read more: http://clashdaily.com/2013/07/2016-shaping-up-to-be-another-progressive-yawnfest/#ixzz2a9EtWZJq  Get more Clash on ClashDaily.com, Facebook, Twitter,...

HOW THE WORLD LOST IT’S DAYUM MIND (AND YOU CAN TOO!)

Jul 24, 13 HOW THE WORLD LOST IT’S DAYUM MIND (AND YOU CAN TOO!)

Posted by in Opinion

It is painful to read a magazine or an op-ed column these days. The comment sections of most online newspapers or message boards are guaranteed to make eyes bleed. People simply cannot think anymore. In olden days, when one was unable to frame a coherent thought or argument, one refrained from speaking in public without the inducement of strong drink. The old adage, which has made its way from King Solomon on down to Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain, held true, “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.” Yet in today’s shameless world of egomaniacal braggadociousness, the more ignorant one is, the more one calls attention to that fact. Now it is tempting to suggest that anyone who disagrees with your worldview or position is ignorant. That is not what I am suggesting (despite the startling number of slack-jawed idjits who happen to oppose my worldview). What I am suggesting is that the average person has a much harder time thinking logically today than at any point since the advent of Greek philosophy, and it is all due to the spread of relativism in our schools and our art.
